About Heineken
Gerard Adriaan Heineken bought the De Hooiberg brewery in Amsterdam in 1864. In 1886 Hartog Elion, a student of Louis Pasteur, cultivated a pure yeast for him: the A-yeast that Heineken still uses today.
Heineken has grown into one of the largest brewers in the world. The Heineken sold in the Netherlands is mostly brewed in Zoeterwoude. It is a 5% lager.
