Privacy policy

In short

No ads, no tracking, and we don't sell anything. Only if you say yes do we anonymously count how the app is used.

Searching and viewing beers works without an account. As a guest, we store nothing about you.

With an account, we store your email address, your name if you give it, your saved places and your history. You can delete all of it yourself with Delete account.

Your age

BierChecker is for 18+. Your date of birth is only checked on your phone and never stored. Your phone only remembers that you are 18+, so you don't have to fill it in every time.

Without an account

When you search, the app sends your search term, the city and the venue to our server to fetch the list and the beers. We don't link that to you.

Like every website, our server sees your IP address. We don't store it, except when you add a venue: then we store an irreversible code of your IP address (a hash) to limit abuse. That code is deleted after 180 days.

BierChecker does not use your location.

With an account

Signing in is handled by Clerk. Clerk stores your email address, your name if you give it and your sign-in details. The same account works on bierchecker.nl.

We store your saved places and your history (which venues you viewed and when), linked to your account. That is needed to show them on all your devices. We only use this for those features.

If you clear your history or delete your account, it is removed from our database immediately. It disappears from our backups within 12 weeks.

Scanning a menu

Do you find the menu yourself, with a photo, a PDF or via the venue's website? Then the app sends it to our server. An AI service reads the beers and prices from it. We don't keep the photo or the file, only the beers and prices on it. Those belong to the venue, not to you.

Only photograph the menu, without people in the picture.

We keep track that a scan happened, for which venue and when, so we can see whether scanning works well. We keep that log for 90 days.

Reporting something or adding a venue

If you report that a menu is wrong, we store the venue, the reason and the time. If you are signed in, also your user ID, so we can spot abuse.

If you add a venue, we check with OpenStreetMap and the venue's website that it really exists. If you delete your account, we remove your user ID from your reports and added venues.

Counting anonymously

After the age check, we ask whether you want to be counted anonymously. If you say yes, we use Google Analytics to see how the app is used: which screens you open, which cities and venues you view, whether we found the menu, how you scanned yourself and whether you left a tip. That helps us make BierChecker better.

Google receives a random app number that is not linked to your name, email address or account, plus details such as your iOS version, your device and roughly your country. We don't use an advertising ID, share nothing for advertising, and Google may not use the data for its own purposes. Google keeps it for 14 months.

If you say no, nothing is sent. You can always change your choice in Profile under Count anonymously. If you turn it off, we delete the app number on your phone.

Buying us a beer

You pay a tip through Apple. We receive no payment details and don't know who is treating us.

The website and the waitlist

bierchecker.nl uses no cookies. We count visits anonymously with Cloudflare Web Analytics: without cookies, without storing your IP address and without following you across other sites. We only see totals, such as how many people viewed a page, which site they came from (for example Google) and whether it was a phone or a computer. The fonts are on our own server.

If you join the waitlist, we store your email address and, if you signed up from a city page, that city. We only use it to email you once when the app is in the App Store. After that we delete the whole list. Want off the list sooner? Email privacy@bierchecker.nl and we'll remove you right away.

Who helps us

We use a few services to make BierChecker work. They may only use your data for that:

• Cloudflare: our server, the website, anonymous visitor statistics and the backups.
• Supabase: our database, also for the waitlist.
• Clerk: sign-in and accounts.
• OpenRouter, with AI models from Google and OpenAI: reading menus.
• Google Analytics: anonymous counting in the app, only if you say yes.
• Apple: the App Store and payments.

Some of these services are based in the United States. That transfer is covered by the agreements approved for this by the European Commission.

Why we are allowed to do this

We use your account details to provide the app you use (performance of a contract). We limit abuse because we have a legitimate interest in it: the app has to stay fair and affordable. We only count anonymously and keep the waitlist with your consent.

Your rights

You may view, correct or delete your data, and you may object. Deleting can be done right away in the app with Delete account. You turn off anonymous counting in Profile. For anything else, email privacy@bierchecker.nl. We respond within a month.

Don't agree with how we handle your data? You can file a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens).

If we change anything in this policy, you'll see it here. For major changes, we'll let you know in the app.
