How we read a beer menu: where the prices come from

Updated 7 October 20262 min read

A price on BierChecker comes from the venue's own beer menu. Here is how we read, convert and check it, on now 299 menus read, and what not to look for in it.

Where the menu comes from

We look for the beer menu on the venue's own website. If it isn't online there, or the site won't let us in, a guest can photograph the menu or share a PDF, and then it's there for everyone. We take no prices from other sites or from review sites.

How the menu is read

An AI model reads the menu and puts every beer, its strength, its size and its price in a row. Then we check that the result is reasonable: a lager at ten euros or a size that doesn't fit the beer doesn't get through. If a beer on the menu has no size, we use the usual size of that beer on other menus and put a ≈ in front.

Why everything per 25 cl

A small glass, a regular glass and a half litre can't be compared directly. So we convert every price to a 25 cl glass. A half litre for €5.90 becomes €2.95 per 25 cl, even though you pay €5.90 at the bar. More about the sizes.

What is and isn't in the figures

  • Only glasses and bottles up to 50 cl. Pitchers and litres don't count, because they are for a group.
  • Per city and per beer the middle price (the median), so one dear or cheap venue doesn't skew the average.
  • A city or a beer only appears in a headline or ranking with enough menus. With three menus you can't say anything about a whole city.
  • Menu prices, not receipts. A happy hour, a special or an increase after the menu was read isn't in it.
  • Every menu shows when we read it. Menus change, and the price at the venue always applies.

Something wrong?

At the bottom of every venue and city page there is a button to report a price or a missing bar. We check it and update the page. Do you run a venue? Email support@bierchecker.nl and we make sure your menu is right.
